Frequently Asked Questions
When should I visit a gynaecologist?
Seeing a gynaecologist is important at every stage of a woman’s life. Here is when you should consider seeing a gynae:
- During adolescence: At this stage, a gynaecologist can help to educate and guide teenage girls on their menstrual cycles, contraception and sexual health.
- During adulthood: At this stage, women should go for regular well woman screenings that include Pap smears and pelvic ultrasounds for the prompt detection and treatment of common gynaecological conditions.
- During perimenopause and beyond: At this stage, women will start to experience hormonal changes and an increased risk of certain gynaecological cancers. A gynaecologist will be able to advise methods to alleviate symptoms and ensure the early detection of cancer.
- When experiencing unusual symptoms: Symptoms such as pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, or abnormal vaginal discharge should warrant a visit to the gynaecologist promptly.
- When dealing with infertility: Couples who are having difficulty getting pregnant should receive a fertility assessment to check for possible causes and treatment options.
What can I expect at my first visit to the gynaecologist?
Many girls and women are anxious about their first visit to the gynaecologist. However, knowing what to expect can go a long way in soothing one’s nerves. Dr Regina will begin by asking questions about your medical history, menstrual health, sexual health, as well as any symptoms or questions you may have.
In some cases, a pelvic exam or imaging scan may be performed. Your gynae will also provide tailored recommendations on vaccinations and screenings. Remember, your gynaecologist is here to help. All information will be kept confidential, and you will be well taken care of.
